I can't really claim to be a fan of the numerous crime-solving TV shows that constantly pop up on the TV again and again. But being a young teenager in the mid-Eighties, I did of course watch "Miami Vice". And I can say that it was actually a good show back in the day.<br/><br/>The music in the TV series was one of the more memorable of music from the mid-Eighties. And who hasn't heard the timeless theme music from "Miami Vice". It is just one of those tunes that you never forget once you heard.<br/><br/>The series is about Detective James Crockett (played by Don Johnson) and Detective Ricardo Tubbs (played by Philip Michael Thomas). Crockett is a relatively carefree man who lives on a sailboat, which is guarded by a trusty alligator named Elvis. Tubbs is a New York police officer who is looking for the man who killed his brother. These two very different men team up to bring down the Florida drug and crime world.<br/><br/>The two main characters were very well-fleshed out and had lots of background story, and equally much character development throughout the series, which really helped build up a solid and memorable TV series. And they had cast two good actors for the roles; two actors who have great on-screen charisma and also capable of holding their own on the screen.<br/><br/>Of course,crime shows go, then there is a certain level of predictability that permeates each and every episode. But creators Anthony Yerkovich and Andres Carranza still did manage to put together a solid TV show that captivated the audience week after week.<br/><br/>Andthis was a mid-Eighties TV crime show, then it wasn't soiled by the usage of ridiculous computer tools, software and other such unrealistic tools that are often seen in crime TV shows today. And that does add a certain level of believability to the series.<br/><br/>"Miami Vice" was a great TV series back in its day. And I will say that it can still be watched today. However, I doubt that the people whom are growing up with today's crime shows will find overly much enjoyment in "Miami Vice",it might be a bit crude and gritty compared to today's fancy and CGI galore crime shows.
A TV series from the 80's, although I was never around during the 80's but I do think of it has a great period for movies, music, TV and style, I've read about Miami Vice and heard about it so I decided to buy it and must say it's a great piece of 80's Television, the style is of the show is so slick and cool, the shots of Miami in the opening credits are beautifully done, the music is 80's and goes with the show, the fashion and styles of clothing that Crocket and Tubbs wear is cool, Miami Vice has great piece of 80's nostalgia for the people who was around in the 80's and those who wasn't. The chemistry between the characters is a great touch, Lethel Weapon does a similar thing with their two main characters. Sometimes they get along and sometimes they don't, the plots are creative and the show does have great pace and action.<br/><br/>Michael Mann who was executive producer on the Miami Vice TV show did the 2006 film Miami Vice which is a modern update to the series. Miami Vice is a great 80's TV show that's slick, stylish and cool. Check this out. 10/10

Brandon Tartikoff had considered former Chips actor Larry Wilcox for the co lead. One reason was that there was a shortage of leading men in the mid-30's age group and that Wilcox had been a cop on the previous television series. However executive producer Michael Mann and creator/writer Anthony Yerkovich had remembered Don Johnson from four failed pilots and had him audition with Philip Michael Thomas for the lead roles. Therefore Wilcox was out and Johnson and Thomas displayed strong on camera chemistry so were then castthe leads and the rest became prime time television history. Not at first, prior to shooting the pilot for Miami Vice, Don Johnson had envisioned the character of Crockettsomewhat of a south Florida cowboy. He wanted to wear blue denims and leather jackets and be a chain smoker. However Michael Mann and the writers wanted for Crockett to be a fashionable police detective who would blend in wellan undercover cop. Plus leather coats and blue jeans did not mix well with the heat and humidity of Miami therefore Johnson relented on his wanting to wear jeans and leather and agreed to dress in designer mens wear provided by Hugo Boss, Gianni Versace & Giorgio Armani and he was also a smoker too. During the show's preproduction there were other actors who'd screen tested with Don Johnson and the producers were not impressed, however after PMT's audition he'd made such an impression on Michael Mann and creator Anthony Yerkovich that they called him back and the rest is television history. Considering that mens fashions were provided by well known designers, Hugo Boss, Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace well the wardrobe budget was huge. In the season one dvd set's extras, there is a feature which answers this question. Costumer supervisor Jody Lynn Tillen was responsible for dressing actors Don Johnson & Philip Michael Thomas in the latest high end fashions of the time, therefore the mens clothing budget was reportedly up to $100,000 dollars for the first season. And most likely around the same budget for the next season.
